Women are from Venus

Women are sometimes accused of trying to “trap” men. If they cry they’re seen as being too “emotional.” If they take charge they’re labelled “bossy.” This piece’s title is a play on the concept of “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.” It depicts a strange creature that looks like a Venus fly trap that is designed to challenge outdated gender perceptions. What if female emotion, rage and sensitivity could be seen as a strength rather than a weakness? What if the creature isn’t monstrous, but actually savagely beautiful? Or maybe it’s another species entirely, from an alien planet which doesn’t have gender binaries or stereotypes…

Leafy Lurker

This piece came about as a result of me exploring the concept of “masking.” I created it a few years before I got my official Autism diagnosis but I’d already started to question my ability to be truly authentic since it seemed all too easy for me to conform to the ideals and expectations of others in an attempt to succeed or fit in. I’ve also pondered the complexity and multi-layered aspects of various people I’ve encountered in my life. Is that arrogance just a front for insecurity? Do they pretend to know everything because they’re afraid of ridicule? This work also hints at the solace and freedom I find in nature where I can be completely unmasked and free to be myself.

Forest Friends

This piece is a celebration of diversity. I like imagining a world where there is the same peace and harmony amongst people that exists in a natural ecosystem like that of a forest. Whether you’re a blue hedgehog or a brown sausage dog, everyone is welcome here and everyone is valued.
